Spain and the Lockdown Crisis 

The COVID-19 crisis engulfed the world arguably at a faster pace than any other global crisis in modern history.  Among other European countries, Spain was barely recovering from the global financial crisis as it faced the challenge of unprecedented proportions. In addition to the economic and political calamities, this crisis added another dimension – a loss of human life and public health crisis. 

The economic impact is likely to be one of the most severe due to the structure of the Spanish economy which relies heavily on tourism. Therefore, the paper centers around the argument that Spain’s delayed response to the pandemic in combination with political and economic factors make it the most affected country in Europe in absolute terms. It would therefore need a significant support from the European Union.
